Varsity - Game Summaries

Hart 28, Burbank 0

With Valencia last week and the Canyon game next week, predictably, this was not the most inspiring game I’ve ever seen.  Some things looked right on track, others unsettling and some true to form for this season.

First, my stats will be a little out of whack because I arrived a little late, missing most of the first Hart drive.  According to my friends, Hart started at about the 21, Lyon ran up the middle for a decent gain and Casselberry (starting in place of the injured Howell) had a nice run for over 30 yards.  I missed some other plays because as I sat down, there was a offside penalty against Burbank which put the ball at the Burbank 12 and that’s where I pick up the story: incomplete, sack for -1, incomplete and then a missed field goal.

Burbank started at the 20: run for 0, pass for -1, run for 2 and punt.

Hart at the 49: incomplete, run by Casselberry for 19, run by Casselberry for 5, incomplete (receiver fell down), run by Casselberry (slipped and fell), incomplete on 4th down at the 26.

Burbank : run for 5, run for 1, pass for 17, run for 0, run for 9 and then fumble at the Hart 40.

Hart: incomplete, run by Casselberry for -1, pass to Yudin for 43, run by Casselberry for 0 [END OF QUARTER] pass to Yudin for 18 and the TD.  Hart 7-0 at 11:57 of the second.

Burbank started at the 35 as the kick went out of bounds: run for -3, incomplete – then the major bugaboo for Hart – QB flushed and gained 27 yards, run for -1, incomplete, pass for 5 and then a missed 54-yard field goal attempt.

Hart at the 20: Sack for -8, pass to Davis for 15, run by Casselberry for 2, run by Lyon for 2, pass to Wheeler for 11, run by Casselberry on a draw for 18, run by Lyon for 9, run by Lyon for 5, Penalty Pass Interference moved the ball to the 14; incomplete (a drop which got the coaches pretty fired up), run by Casselberry for 0, Penalty Pass Interference (looked like very good defense to me) then a 7-yard run by Casselberry for the TD.  Hart 14-0 at 3:47.

Burbank at the 20: run for 13, run for 6, run for -3, pass for 37, incomplete and then INT by Luna.

Hart at the 20: penalty for holding, pass to Yudin for 9, pass to Yudin for 16, incomplete, incomplete, run by Lyon (flush) for 10, pass to Wheeler 11, Spike – There were a bunch of horrible timekeeping errors.  The timekeeper tried his darndest to end the half before Hart could score.  Among other things, he started the clock after the refs set the ball after the spike.  In any event, Hart got off one more play, a 9-yard pass to Yudin and then tried a 52-yard field goal that had plenty of leg but was wide left.

Hart 14-0 at halftime.

Burbank started the second half at the 20: Luna intercepted the first pass but was called out of bounds; run for 15, run for 2, run by the QB after he was flushed for 16, run for -2 and then INT by Sarkissian with a nice return.

An illegal block on the return moved the ball back to the Burbank 43: run by Wheeler for 14, pass to Wheeler for 9, run by Casselberry for 16, run by Wheeler for 14, run by Lyon for 5 and the TD.  Hart 21-0 at 7:27.

Burbank at the 20: run for 1, incomplete, run for 5 and punt.

Hart at the Burbank 47: pass to Wheeler for 13, incomplete, incomplete, incomplete and incomplete plus an unsportsmanlike conduct which game Burbank the ball at the 49.

Burbank: penalty for defensive holding against Hart on a running play, run for 1, pass for 7, run for 2, illegal procedure, run by the QB after he was flushed for 19, run for 01, incompleted, run for 1 and, on 4th down, run by the QB for 3.

Hart at the 11: run by Casselberry for about 40 and then a fumble at the end of the play.

Burbank at the 46: run by the QB after he was flushed for 24, pass for 13, FUMBLE recovered by Hickok.

Hart at the 20: run by Casselberry for 10 [END OF QUARTER], run by Casselberry for 8, run by Lyon for 1, run by Lyon for 2, pass to Casselberry for 27 but then 10 yards taken off for a hold at the end of the play, run by Casselberry for 12, incomplete, run by Lyon for -3, incomplete (hit as he threw) and incomplete on 4th down.

Burbank at the 38: run by the quarterback for 2 after he was flushed, pass for 17 and then INT by Reyes.

Hart at the 37: Pass to Yudin for 8, run by Lyon for -2, incomplete and punt (bad snap, bad punt, very nice roll).

Burbank : run for 4, run for 2 (another flush), pass for -3 on a hook and ladder and punt.

Hart: Run by Wheeler for 16, run by Casselberry for 39 down to the 7, run by Casselberry for 1, run by Casselberry for 4, run by Casselberry for 1 and run by Lyon on 4th down for 1 and the TD.  Hart 28-0 at 1:19.

Burbank at the 20: pass for 8, penalty for pass interference, run by the QB (flushed) for 5 and then another INT, this time by Ardnt.  One knee and it was over.

Stats for Hart: I have Casselberry at about 220 yards on 19 carries.  He may have had more yards and more carries since I missed about 3 minutes at the top of the game. [As reported in the papers the next day, he had about 248 yards, a Hart single game yardage record.]

Lyon was really streaky tonight, missing on his first 6 passes and then hitting everything in sight but then finishing the game with a bunch of misses.  He was, according to my notes, 12 of 29 for about 189 yards and 1 touchdown.  He also rushed for 34 yards and 2 TDs. I had Yudin with 6 catches and about 106 yards.  The number might be slightly better depending on what I missed to start the game.

The Burbank QB had over 100 yards rushing, virtually all of it after being flushed.  Of course he also had 3 INTS and his team had 2 fumbles as well.

Hart’s slow starts continue.  Hart has been behind in the first quarter or tied in 7 of 9 games.  Only in the Westlake and Burroughs games did Hart have a lead at the end of the first quarter.

Hart’s offensive line can really dominate games.  Casselberry and Wheeler were, more often than not, past the line of scrimmage before being touched on almost every play.  The defense recorded its first shutout.

Next week: the big shootout with 8-1 Canyon who trampled Valencia 49-21 (tied at half).
